The ocean is the final destination of all the floating water on earth. Therefore, the ocean became the huge water tank for human’s waste and pollutions. Very likely, every item that we created and used in the city will eventually go into the ocean. As human beings who are so used to the convenience of modern life, we don’t often think about the consequences of our daily convenience. How about the creature living in the ocean? How about their living environment?
In 2002, artist Kang Muxiang lived alone on Turtle Island, a small island located northeast from Taiwan. During the year of his residence there, he captured fish, set up the fire to cook, lived a primitive lifestyle. That was the turning point of his life and career. After spending plenty of quality time with the Mother Nature, Kang Muxiang’s perspective on life was permanently transformed. From then on, “environmental protection” has become the major subject of Kang Muxiang’s art creation.
In our fast-paced daily routine, it is very easy to overlook the consequences of our modern lifestyle and take things for granted. Through creating this work that is made with recycled materials, artist Kang Muxiang brings a worried whale from the ocean to our city. Standing in front of it, one can’t help imagine how it is to live under the water. And if a big whale is worried very much about his existence tomorrow, what can we do as human beings to help the big whale to ease the worrisome thoughts?
Our mother earth is one unseparated being. If we can be more aware of the sustainability of our living environment, we can definitely benefit more than just the whales in the ocean. It will also be beneficial to ourselves, to our children, our grandchildren, and to the generations after us. Perhaps, after viewing this work, for the sake of the whales in the ocean, you would be more willing to spend more time on recycling, and to consume less plastic products. Everything all goes back to one basic question: what kind of earth do you want your descendants to live in? Let’s save the whales from worrying together!
